His stories covered the spectrum of life and of course he knew our Club of old, so was able
to use that knowledge in his repartee. For me the one story that stuck in the mind,
appropriately more suited to the older members present, was “ Shall I write it down?” Can
you remember that one? He concluded to great applause before proposing the toast to ‘The
Immortal Memory of Charles Dickens & The Pickwick Bicycle Club’. Unusual in itself inasmuch
that it is normally for the guests to raise their glasses, but on this occasion it was the Club
members who did so.
Our President had a hard act to follow with both Gerald
Dickens and Ian Irving preceding him, but with his usual laconic
style and a big smile on his face, he expressed his thanks to the
organisers of this special occasion, and to our guest speakers
before asking everyone to charge their glasses and toast each
other. So it was time for Auld Lang Syne to ring out and we
moved out of the Great Hall and back to the area adjacent to
the Saddle Room. All too soon the evening was coming towards a
close, but there would still be time to mingle and consume more
Pickwickian Ale, or even disappear outside to light the pipes.
Thus ended one of the Club’s most prestigious events that
befitted our 150th Anniversary.
