Benson Veteran Cycle Rally 2015……..
Having attended the BVCC rallies with my father, Mr Dumkins
(yes he had my sobriquet before me) for many years from the
time I could first ride a bicycle it was with fond memories of
both him and the event that I returned in 2014 on my ordinary.
It was however my fitness that let me down on that occasion
as I struggled with the hills but made it around (of sorts); so
with my health improved but not really up to the event my wife
Sue and I decided to attend this year’s event to give moral
support.
The day started by meeting on the village green at Benson in
Oxfordshire and was attended this year by Bullman, Mr Brooks,
Sergeant Buzfuz, Alfred Jingle and Joseph Smiggers. It was the
perfect day for the rally, sunny and warm with a slight breeze as the
riders’ set of at intervals into the rolling Oxfordshire countryside.
The first stop was at a very kind local residents house where
he had set up free refreshments in his beautiful garden
(including 2 barrels of a very fine locally brewed ale) and
then continued on to The Lamb in Chalgrove for a very fine
luncheon accompanied by a brass band! The cyclists then
mounted up and cycled the return leg back to Benson to
collect their commemorative medals before heading home.
In all, a thoroughly enjoyable day and highly recommended to
all members, cycling or not. By the time of next years event we
will, as a club, have 2 or 3 club bicycles and will be looking for
riders to come and exercise them around the course!
