Pickwick Bicycle Club Magazine Volume 18 No.1 March 2021 17
A Miscellany of Interesting Items…………….
The ‘Young Cyclist’
From the Antipodes (that’s the other side of the world to thee and me), Smiggers was
contacted by a certain Alan Naber - the said ‘young cyclist’. The afore mentioned having
read about our Club in an article by our friend David Hourly in the Veteran Cycle Club
magazine, he wanted to know more about us. Of particular interest was information about
the week-end Hampton Court Rides of the 1880s, since he wanted to do a presentation
about it to the West Australian Historic Cycle Club. Your editor has provided as much detail
as possible about the rides, including pictorial evidence from the 21st Century. Glad to know
that our existence is world wide and of interest. Alan is now on the magazine mailing list to
read about our future endeavours and hopefully our Anniversary celebrations.

The National Cycle Museum (Llandrindod Wells)
Freda at the museum recently sent me a copy of the NCM Friend’s Magazine, which has
plenty of interesting new. They like most operations are finding it hard to manage within the
lockdown regulations. They were recently delighted to receive a donation of a De Commer
cycle that appears to have originated from a Belgium historic cycle collector. It has wooden
spoked wheels and wooden mudguards, and still retains its Antwerp licence plates. The
museum is always on the look out for cycling tools, bicycle parts and other related
equipment, plus they often have surplus museum bike sales. If you want more details then
contact Steve Griffith on griffith531@hotmail.com or why not visit the museum website on:

Mr P. Goes to Somewhere
The King of The Goblins - has indicated that he would like to revive the annual “Mr
Pickwick Goes to …” event, but in a revised format and not necessarily linked to the Tour de
France. Once our lives and freedom are back to some sort of normality (?), he would plan to
arrange annual trip(s) into Europe (or Le Continent as it used to be known) to places of
interest, for socialising, riding bicycles, or visiting related Museums. These trips to
replicate those of many years ago which were always well supported. So - watch this space!
