Past President, Samkin then welcomed the seemingly increasing list of notable guests-
see page 12 for the full details. Our new Captain, Dr Payne was in full control and brought
the necessary order to proceedings for the arrival of the Boys of the Old Brigade
accompanied by Mr Dumkins bringing the Joseph Atto punch bowl to the President’s table.
Both old comrades (really?-they continue to look younger than many Pickwick members) gave
their rank & numbers with gusto, not the least inhibited with the thought of “Don’t tell them
Pike.”
Time moved on and Sergeant Buzfuz was called upon to
announce five (5) new members to the Club and provide them with
their soubriquets. These were: Tom Dollow (grandson of Joe the
Fat Boy) – to be known as Slummintowkens; Carlton Kirby – Mr
Ayresleigh; Dan Lloyd – Number 20; Michael Couzens – Martin the
Long Gamekeeper; and finally long time friend of the Club -
Maurice Burton – Namby. We welcome them all to the Club and Maurice Burton “ Namby”
trust they will help to maintain its traditions and continuity.
The arrival of the Plum Pudding was a quiet affair this year, with no dimming of lights or
“Good King Wenceslas” refrain, but it certainly tasted pretty good.
Our guest for the day was the diminutive Dominic Holland,
comedian, author and broadcaster. Dominic worked closely with &
for Eddie Izzard early in his career, and he kept us delightfully
entertained with his insight into everyday life, including his own
domestic failings. He concluded by asking the guest to charge
their glasses to the “Immortal Memory…”
