Mr Pickwick goes to Beaulieu Report by Mr Watty.
Our President Mr Samuel Pickwick has determined that our Club, the oldest cycling club in the
World, should return to its roots and organise more outings in the splendid English countryside
astride bicycles of whatever sort!
And so, a spring event was announced,
and a gathering of Pickwickians made
their way to Beaulieu Museum to ride
and display their vintage machines.
Thankfully, it was a rare dry day and
with support from the Solent Veteran
Bicycle and Tricycle Club, we put on a
fine display, much to the appreciation of
the public visitors. There were:
· An 1870 Velocipede
· Two fine original Ordinaries
· Three superb Tri-cycles
· An 1893 Humber Safety
· An 1899 Path
Racer
· And various other
more modern
machines
We adjourned for
lunch with a ride to
Bucklers Hard,
which was
challenging for the
older bikes and
riders! Bucklers
Hard was the
birthplace of many
of the fleet of
Admiral Lord
Horatio Nelson,
and the Georgian
atmosphere and excellent food were enjoyed by all!
On returning to Beaulieu we had the opportunity
to visit the Museum, particularly the wonderful
display of James Bond cars.
And so, with a smile on our faces, we bade
farewell and departed but with a clear
determination to meet again somewhere some
when for a repeat outing of Pickwickians and their
bicycles…
