The Joseph Atto Punchbowl
A feature of our Pickwickian gatherings is the toast drunk each year to the memory of Joseph Atto. Under the
sobriquet of Nathaniel Pipkin, he was a former President of the Club whose deep and abiding interest in the
Club was shown by his bequest of the sum of £1,000, with the wish that "the Club shall out of the income thereof
defray the expense of an annual toast to be known as "Past President Joseph Atto's Toast of Prosperity to the
Pickwick Bicycle Club."
The toast is drunk in punch, prepared from a special recipe held by the Club, from the magnificent Silver Punch
Bowl.
The inscription on the front of the Bowl reads:-
"This Punch Bowl is to keep evergreen the memory of Joseph Atto, who passed away on
June 30th, 1918, aged 84 years, leaving his love for the Pickwick Bicycle Club to be permanently remembered
by a gift from funds bequeathed by him."
