Pickwick Bicycle Club Magazine Volume 15 No.1 March 2018 !14
The Boys of the Old Brigade & The Band of The Household Cavalry
The singing of Auld Lang Syne brought proceedings to a close for another year, although
there were plenty of opportunities for the now regular photo-shots with both the Household
Cavalry Officers & the Chelsea pensioners, as well as the presence of a professional
photographer who was attempting to capture pic’s of all Club members in attendance, for
incorporation in the planned special ‘members book’ –part of the 2020 celebrations.
A little story from Frank Simmery (Helmut Stibal) shows how once hooked into
the Pickwick Bicycle Club there is no escape!
Dear Winkle Snr,
Thank you for the last Club magazine. I would like to tell you of a recent happening that
might amuse you. I had to organise a walking trip to the Black Forest for a small group of
friends and sent out a message with details, and mentioning that we should have a lunch
package for a picnic in the open air. But instead of writing ‘picnic’ I wrote Pickwick!
You should know that even in German language we use the term “picnic’’ My friends also
know about my connection to the Pickwick Club, and whilst walking they asked me if the
change of spelling was simply to amuse them. It was only then I realised my slip.
What does this tell us? It shows just how much my mind is always involved in Pickwick
affairs.
Best wishes
Frank Simmery
