An off shoot of the local club is a group called
the Dandy Chargers a number of somewhat
eccentric individuals who own and ride replica
Hobby Horses dressed in appropriate period (1818)
costumes appearing at National Trust Houses and
historic events throughout the summer months

In my younger days I would have played cricket
in the summer and hockey in the winter. I am still
heavily involved with hockey, but the historic
cycling now takes up substantial parts of the year.

What a difference a move made! Buzfuz

Buzfuz also sent me an interesting news item about Dickens’s family history:

    Dear Mr Editor,
I have received a letter addressed to the Club from Thomas Keneally- an
Australian author who has written a book that was due to be published during the
first week of September. (It’s believed he is the author of Schindler’s List).
He has been researching the destiny of two of Dickens’s sons, sent to Australia in
the 1860’s. The novel is about the two brother’s experience up to the time of the
death of Dickens. Both settled in a remote part of the country occupied by
aboriginal tribes and the children of convicts. It is hoped that readers will get a
sense of what Dickens, his wife Catherine and the far spread Dickens children were
    engaged in.
The publishers are Sceptre Imprint of Hachette in London.
Cost is around £14.75 but it’s also available in paperback & on Kindle.
