top cyclists including……….”
John McClelland –Irish track champion and member of the Pickwick, Vic Hopkins, Matt
Stephens, & Alf Engers, also known as the King of Time Trialling. Maurice Burton a giant
of track racing who rode 56 x 6-Day events and David le Grys who must have thighs like
giant redwoods because in 1986 he set a world speed record of, I kid you not, 126mph.
Also from the cycling world we have Stuart Hallam CEO of Cycling Ireland and regular
guest Peter Ruffhea, President of the Pedal Club.
We are delighted to have with us Stuart (hippy) Birnie, the 2013 24hr National Time
Trial Champion and 2014 World 24hr Time trial champion – completing a mere 518 miles.
That’s 21.5 mph for 24 hours. as you can tell from this stunning physique I doubt I could
do 21.5 mph for 24 seconds. As a guest of member Brother Mordlin, Glynn Stockdale who
on a Penny Farthing rode the English Coast to Coast, Lands End to John O’Groats, Ireland
Coast to Coast and the traversed the USA, 3358 miles in 45 days.
We are also delighted to welcome Jeffrey Schwartz Chief Financial Officer and Co-
owner of Dorel of Canada, owners of Cannondale, Schwinn, GT and many others.
Having ridden with Mr Watty for 500 miles this summer from Paris to Avignon on
velocipedes we welcome from France, Francis Robin a historian and researcher on the
history of the bicycle. He established Paris Velocipedia and in 2011 organised events to
th
celebrate the 150 anniversary of the first bicycle. On other sporting fronts we welcome
back Micky Stewart a past England Cricket manager and past speaker at our luncheons.
(not sure he managed to attend-Editor) Along with a sporting party that includes Paul
Volley ex England , Lions, Wasps and Harlequins rugby player.
Other guests include David Ward general secretary of the Post office union and some
members will have spotted, out of uniform this time, Tim West who has been one of our
regular trumpeters for a number of years.
Gentlemen you are all welcome as are all guests.
Now as we all know, Samuel Pickwick loved a jaunt. Talking of jaunts, did you see what I
did there? My next introduction is actually to one of our own. We are, gentlemen, in the
presence of a record breaker from our own ranks.
