The Annual Golf Day
Report by Smithers
A splendid June day graced the first Golf & Cycle Day for three years held, as always, at
Harpenden Common Golf Club on Thursday 9th June. We were once again made most welcome
by the management and catering staff, although these have both changed from previous
years. The attendance, compared to other years was meagre, which was unfortunate as those
who did attend had a most convivial time.
The five members who golfed, together with their nine guests, really appreciated the
excellent condition of the course and the two members plus three guests who joined us for
lunch, were very appreciative of the fine repast. We dined in the light and airy clubhouse on
parsnip soup, terrine, chicken pie, and creme brûlée. The golf was as always played to a
respectable standard, although the nearest to the pin competition left much to be desired
(see below). The results were as follows:
Namby Cup - (best stableford score) - Mr Warren (Nigel Redmile) 38pts
Crandyke Cup -(best stableford score guests) - Mark Doorbar(guest of George the Father)
Winkle Cup - (nearest the pin members) - Dr Payne of the 43rd /Captain (Tim Stephens)
Note - the actual nearest the pin was Mr Warren (the only member on the green) but in true Pickwickian tradiVon, no
one person can win two trophies, so the cup was awarded to Dr Payne as he was the closest - albeit, in a bunker!
The Mini Winkle Cup -(nearest the pin guests) - David Livett (guest of Dr Payne)
Jinkins Balls - (for something exceptional on the course) - George the Father
He holed a forty foot pu\ aier one of his partners had done exactly the same thing!
You will note that the Blink Bowl for cycling was not awarded - which was because we had no
cyclists this year! I sincerely hope this will be remedied next year.
