Smithers
'That's all right,' replied Mr. Perker's clerk; and then seeing Mr. Pickwick's eye wandering curiously
towards the table, he added, 'will you join us, for half an hour or so? We are capital company here
to-night. There's Samkin and Green's managing- clerk, and Smithers and Price's chancery, and
Pimkin and Thomas's out o' doors--sings a capital song, he does--and Jack Bamber, and ever so
many more. You're come out of the country, I suppose. Would you like to join us?'

Red-nosed Mr Stiggins - Reverend. The deputy shepherd:
“'He may be, or he may not,' replied Mrs. Weller, buttering the round
of toast which the red-nosed man had just finished. 'I don't know, and,
what's more, I don't care.--Ask a blessin', Mr. Stiggins.' The red-nosed
man did as he was desired, and instantly commenced on the toast
with fierce voracity. The appearance of the red-nosed man had
induced Sam, at first sight, to more than half suspect that he was the
deputy- shepherd of whom his estimable parent had spoken. The
moment perceived at once that if he purposed to take up his temporary
quarters where he was, he must make his footing good without delay.
He therefore commenced proceedings by putting his arm over the
half-door of the bar, coolly unbolting it, and leisurely walking in.”

Our esteemed colleague, and Past President, Joseph Smiggers, Esq. P.V.P.M.P.C.
has gone to considerable lengths to provide members with the history of their sobriquets.
It is a sad state of affairs when members show such lack of interest when asked to
provide suitable portraits that they do not respond, even with an apology or excuse.
Publishing a portrait photo next to the sobriquet serves the purpose of recognising
the holder, particularly those whose connection to cycling and / or Dickens may be
somewhat tenuous.
