Some unusual facts recorded in a 1934 cycling
programme
“Public Spirited” people first advocated a bicycle tax 30 years ago.
At the Stanley Show of 1883, 289 Tricycles were exhibited against 233 bicycles.
In 1886 the CTC (Cyclist Touring Club) petitioned Parliament advocating front
lights on motor transport. Since 1914 they successfully fought against rear
lights for bicycles.
In July 1933 F.W. Southall & S.M. Butler set a new competition record of
4h. 1m.3s. in the Oak Tandem 100 mile time trial.
In October 1933, the same F.W.Southall joined the Hercules Cycle Co. as a
professional following four years as the top amateur cyclist in the country.
In September 1933, following a collision with a motor vehicle, the distinguished figure
of cycling for two generations, F.T.Bidlake was tragically killed in Barnet.
In November 1933 over a thousand cyclists- and pedestrians passed a resolution in
London, calling upon the Government to protect all users of the public highway.
Cycling magazine is 43 years old; the bicycle is 93; The CTC & NCU are 56;
the pneumatic tyre is 46; and The Pickwick Bicycle Club, the oldest bicycling club
in the world is 64.
