Charities
The Pickwick Bicycle Club has a fine tradition of support for deserving charities, the first printed reference
of which is dated 1887 when the sum of £20.7s.6d was raised towards the provision of the “Cyclists Jubilee
Lifeboat” for the National Lifeboat Institution. The tradition has been maintained each year through the
collection of fines for “improper dress” at the two Connaught Rooms luncheons, boosted by donations from other
members and guests. Collections have also been made during the Golf Day Lunch and the Hampton Court Ride
luncheon.
The photo above shows Pickwick Bicycle Club members presenting two tandems at the Revolution 19 meeting, 12 January 2008, at the Manchester Velodrome. Hugh Porter MBE (Jonas Mudge) left his commentary box to join the presentation. A road tandem was presented to Rochdale Cycling Club for Handicapped Children. The project was funded by The Pickwick Bicycle Club, and the tandems were built by Condor Cycles. The following are some of the charities that have benefited from the generosity of members and guests:
At the Club's twenty-third Annual Dinner in 1892, £6 6s. 6d. was raised for the Children's Dinner Fund organised by "The Referee" journal. In following years, £4 10s. 6d. was raised in 1893, £15 in 1895, 15 guineas in 1896, twenty guineas in 1897, £26 2s. 6d in 1899, and over £30 in 1901. On October 14th, 1899 the club raised five guineas for the Princess of Wales' Fund for the wives and families of the soldiers engaged in the second Boer War that started 3 days prior. | |
